Is the Cover Letter Important?

Cover letter is basically a supplement that serves as an opening for the recruiter when you apply for a job. It helps him to know what to expect in your resume and later on in you during the interview. The importance of the cover letter can be judged from the following three points listed below:

First Impression
Cover letter will be read before the actual CV/ resume will make a quick first impression of who you are and how suitable you might be for the company.

Adds Value
Not all applications will be accompanied by the cover letter so you will an extra edge over other applicants. A lot of resumes get trashed by the recruiters in the initial short-listing if a cover letter is not attached.

Marketing Tool
Cover letter is used to sell your resume; resume leads to the interview; interview gets you selected.

A cover letter is more aptly able to list down your objectives, highlight your achievements and explain things that you cannot explain in your CV/ resume.
