How To Ace an Engineering Interview

Just like any other interview, an interview for an engineering job has the sole purpose of presenting your skills before the employer and convincing them that you are the right person for the job.

Prepare yourself
Go over the job description and make sure you fully understand its requirements. Read and reread your CV so you are prepared to take up any question asked. Also, find out something about the organization and the projects it is involved in.

Carry a professional look
It is important to dress neatly and formally for the interview. Do not wear flashy or vibrant colours. Keep your accessories simple, make sure your hair is neatly combed and shoes are polished.

First 60 seconds are important
Employers will develop an image of you in the first 60 seconds, so walk in the room with a straight back, shake hands firmly and wear a smile when you greet the interviewer. Keep you speech clear when introducing yourself.

What to talk about
Go over your resume before the interview and list down the important details that are missing. Elaborate on these details during the interview. If your CV shows time lapses that need explanation, now is the time to do it. You can also add any interesting happenings during your educational training or prior work experience.

What NOT to do
Do not slouch, rub your head or your nose. Do speak too fast or too slow. You may, however, pause before speaking to make sure you have understood the question.

Asking employers
Asking relevant questions from the employer will show your interest and project confidence. It will also help you in deciding whether you want to work for this company or not. Questions could relate to their ongoing or upcoming projects, their work practices, or employment laws.

Work portfolio
You may carry a work portfolio that is carefully planned and prepared for presentation. But keep it concise and relevant.

You will be asked specific technical questions related to your engineering field. Click below for sample questions:
