For an effective online job search, the first and the most critical decision faced by the job seeker is to choose the right job site. There are plenty of options – some are good, some are bad, some are very bad! Job seekers need to be very careful before they sign up with any job site as ending up in the wrong place will not only a waste of time but could also cost money.
Bad job sites generally have the following characteristics:
Sign up fee – Viewing job openings and applying to them is a free service, so stay away from the ones that require charges when signing up.
Promises fast recruitment – Recruitment process is usually very long so a promise of a fast service has to be false.
Guarantees exclusive listings – this is a service already available on the internet and for free.
Speaks louder – Generally the ‘not very good job sites’ claim themselves to be the best and they are not. If you see a lot of self-praise on the website, look at it more closely.
Most search engines have checks and admin controls to delete or ban suspicious looking websites, but job seekers need to do their own research to avoid falling in a trap.
