Career Development is Now Essential

The traditional approach has been that employers invest in their employees’ career planning and development. Times have changed. Now, the employees themselves need to be responsible for redefining their career paths. The ever-increasing competitiveness and the changing needs of the labor market has compelled the employees to take some time off their busy routines and focus on adapting skill building and career enhancement techniques. The workers have come to a realization that this will be useful in gaining that competitive edge especially in difficult economic times when companies are shedding off the extra staff. Also, due to technological advancements and new techniques of production and business management being introduced throughout the organization, getting acquainted with new skills has become inevitable. There are several ways how this may be achieved:

· Career advancement can take place through higher education. This involves enrollment in the specially designed college programs for the executives.

· Climbing the career ladder also involves changing your current job through lateral movement either within the same organization or moving to another.

· By acquiring new skills, the current job can be made more meaningful for you and more productive to your employers.

· Another effective way to explore new and better opportunities is through relocation.

Chalk out your individual development plan effectively to bring about a transition for a more stimulating and motivating work life.
